Lake Buena Vista, Florida – November 14th & November 18th, 2012
Tam Tam Drummers of Harambe African drummers rousing the crowd Where to next? Kilimanjaro Safaris entrance Yes, I will be using FastPass to skip the lines on Kilimanjaro Safaris. The line for Kilimanjaro Safaris includes these instances of foreshadowing... too bad there isn't anything to foreshadow anymore! Notice signs for the Kilimanjaro Safaris Notice signs for the Kilimanjaro Safaris Kilimanjaro Safari truck Remember to disturb and feed the animals, discard your litter, cut and destroy the vegetation, and leave the designated roads or trails... you can skip reading over the small red text. Final waiting area for Kilimanjaro Safaris. A bit of a sardine tin, but understandable given how many people they have to move through at once. Safari trucks Now entering the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. First up on the tour... blurry cattle. Eh, we can do better. Okay, this is a bit better. Bongo through the trees. I believe these were two female Nyalas. Safari Trek group observing the hippos These hippos were using the other hippo as a water pillow. Pink-backed Pelicans surrounded by Hippos Honestly a few of the first exhibits have that "animals in a pit or surrounded by a fence" feel you get at lesser zoos. Thankfully things improve in the next bit. Concrete baobab tree... one of the few artificial elements on savannah. The moment we emerge on the savannah is a nice transition from the somewhat cluttered exhibits at the beginning. Reticulated giraffe on the safari tour, with an Ankole cow. Giraffe and a stump. Giraffe and (I think) an eland. Ankole cattle One fact I learned from the tour is that these heavy-looking horns actually have a hollow honey-combed pattern on the inside, and blood circulates through them to help cool the animal down.
