West Mifflin/Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – July 11th & 12th, 2012
The system works by running two cars side by side, with the vehicles acting as counterweights for each other. Inside the car looking out at the city. Nearing the top of the 30 degree incline. And we're at the top, which features both a museum and observation deck. Overview of Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle, with the incline railway track along the bottom. The Golden Triangle is at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers into the Ohio River. Heinz Stadium viewed from the top of Mt. Washington. The Ohio River (and presumably Ohio) is off in that direction. Pittsburgh's Gothic skyscrapers loom over the river. Supposedly a lot of The Dark Knight Rises was filmed here. Funicular car going back down. Best view of the city A new group of funiculers arriving in the station. Neat building at the top of Mt. Washington. Picture of a city through the late morning haze. This probably wasn't the best time of day or visibility conditions for photography, but it was still a great sight regardless. Bridges spanning the Allegheny. Back inside the museum, here are some newspaper clippings about the incline's popularity as a tourist destination. Sixth Avenue and Cherry Way, 1905 A piece of pulling cable: 1 1/8" steel wire rope, capacity 50 tons. It's been an attraction for Pittsburgh tourists for longer than the Thunderbolt has been around. Correct 1¢ Weight These will be getting me down the hillside safely (the guide sheaves, not the legs). Back at the parking lot near ground level, ready to start the drive east to Sunbury.
