Six Flags Great Adventure - Photo Journal

Superman Ultimate Flight is looking... faded. Sigh, I really don't want to do this, but I feel I should. I haven't been on this particular version since it opened in 2003. Sun-faded billboards to distract us from the fact we're stuck in a cattle-pen queue built over a former parking lot. At least they replaced the asphalt with grass. Superman's long line on a day that otherwise barely saw five minute waits on the other attractions is more a testament to its poor capacity than its popularity as a roller coaster. To keep guests cool while waiting in line, Six Flags was kind enough to place a portable garden sprinkler to douse passersby. Most waited to duck through this area while the sprinkler was turned the other direction, but a few were more than happy to soak it in. Stay classy, Six Flags. As least the loading platform and ride structure appear to be recently painted. Superman, with taller coasters in the background. Ascending the lift in the prone position. Superman Ultimate Flight Superman's pretzel loop dips slightly below grade. Silhouette of a Super pretzel. Superman's pretzel loop Superman askew After the highlight pretzel loop, Superman swirls around a series of overbanked curves. Superman Ultimate Flight Most of these swooping turns are just there to fill in layout space. I like the ride experience well enough, but I very rarely ever get to ride it without being frustrated by all the crap that surrounds these rides. A final in-line roll wraps up the layout on Superman Ultimate Flight. Superman Ultimate Flight and... hey, what's that blocking the view? It's Green Lantern, the park's new for 2011 stand-up coaster that they managed to sneak out of Kentucky Kingdom before abandoning their lease on the place. It's a green Chang with props strewn around. I liked Chang decently enough last I rode it in 2009. I didn't need it at Six Flags Great Adventure, and I needed it even less to replace yet another of the park's legacy attractions pre-Premier, The Great American Scream Machine. Here begins the story... Most people think Hal Jordan was born without fear. Those people are wrong... His worst fear happened in front of his eyes when he witnessed his father's tragic death. After that day, there was nothing left to be afraid of. Hal "Highball" Jordan found his calling in the cockpit. The renegade test pilot threw caution to the wind in the air force then tested the limits at Ferris Air. In his final moments, Abin Sur, Green Lantern of Sector 2814 sent his ring in search of a replacement. The fearless Hal Jordan was chosen as the first human Green Lantern. Billions of years ago, the self-appointed Guardians of the Universe recruited thousands of sentient beings to join the intergalactic police force: The Green Lantern Corps. The Green Lanterns patrol their respective sectors armed with power rings capable of wielding the emerald energy of willpower. The ring can construct any weapon you need. Just picture in your mind and will it to life. A Green Lantern's power battery is their power ring's charging station. Recharging is required approximately every twenty-four terestrial (sic) hours. After completing training to battle fear and evil, the final rite of passage for Green Lantern recruits is reciting the sacred Green Lantern Oath: "In brightest day... In blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight, let those who worship evil's might, beware my power-- Green Lantern's light!" Okay, now it's time to ride...
