Six Flags Great Adventure - Photo Journal
Jackson, New Jersey – Tuesday, July 17th, 2012
I love golden hour. I feel like the Terrence Malick of roller coaster photographers with this one. More arty symbolic dualism in a place that sells all-the-hot-dogs-you-can-eat season passes for a hundred bucks. Runaway Mine Train at sunset Once again, the Runaway Mine Train is a good ride once you can learn to look past its brevity. Rode it twice more in the evening just because I really wanted to. I think this goose and I were both expecting each other to do something more interesting. Ahh, more Bizarro. Sometimes I forget it's even back here. Okay, this requires some explanation... so, originally, Medusa was banished by Zeus to live in the old American west, which is why she set up this mining company. But then Bizarro took over and things got more bizarre. Hey, at least they tried! Admittedly when it comes to avant-garde themed design Six Flags occasionally (if unintentionally) gets it right. Bizarro fact sheet, to prove the creative director did do their homework. Bizarro station, honestly pretty typical. Dive loop silhouetted Bizarro's second inversion is this dive loop. Fire effects haven't been cut for budget just yet. Half a cobra roll in silhouette Cobra roll silhouette Back for more El Toro El Toro backlit El Toro and Kingda Ka El Toro Marvelous evening at Six Flags Great Adventure. Best part, the park is open for another hour and there are virtually no crowds left. While I gave hanging out at Batman and Nitro some serious consideration, in the end I had to close out the night with even more El Toro. I got nine consecutive rides at the end of the night without getting off. I'll admit I had my doubts about adding Six Flags to my schedule given my budget (even with a season pass it was pretty tight), but just the time in the evening I spend on El Toro would have been one of my highlights from 2012. There's so much crap that goes with a typical visit to Six Flags, but under the right circumstances you can get something like this, marathon riding one of the biggest and best wooden coasters under perfect conditions, which happens just frequently enough that I somehow end up with a season pass year after year. I'm sure I'll be back again...
